Scholarships of Interest to UAH Women

Last updated February 15, 2008

All of these scholarships are available to UAH students.  Some are also available to students at other Huntsville colleges and universities.  It's important to note that several of these do not go through the UAH Financial Aid Office.  That means students must fill out separate applications.  One advantage of this is that students may win more than one of these scholarships.  For endowed scholarships handled through the UAH Financial Aid Office, students may win only one scholarship.    Note that December 1 is the deadline for the UAH Financial Aid Office (changed from the old deadline of February 1).  Many scholarships on this page have other deadlines because they are not handled through the UAH Financial Aid Office.

Harris Scholarship - the UAH Women's Studies program offers a $700 scholarship each year to a Women's Studies minor.  Deadline for priority consideration is February 1, but applications may be considered after February 1.  Students apply through the UAH Financial Aid office but should notify the Director of Women's Studies to make sure the application is channeled correctly.  This is an endowed scholarship, so the amount of the award may vary.  For further information, contact the Director of Women's Studies, 824-2298.

AAUW (American Association of University Women) - had offered a $500 scholarship to a woman student each year at each of the three local colleges and universities (Alabama A&M University, Oakwood College, and UAH).  They now offer instead financial support for students at these schools to attend the AAUW Student Leadership Conference in June in Washington, DC.   For information, contact Dr. Rose Norman, 256/824-2373.

ABWA (American Business Women's Association), AlaHunt Chapter - offers a $1000 scholarship for women students, with preference for those in their first year of college, or returning students, or those making a career change.  Deadline is usually August, for an award in September each year.

ASIST  (Adult Students In Scholastic Transition) - The Huntsville Chapter of Executive Women International sponsors a $1500 scholarships for a non-traditional student at a North Alabama university.  These scholarships are based on financial need.  Applications are due April 16 and may be obtained online at www.executivewomen.org or from Erin Reid in Morton Hall 344.  Completed applications go to Executive Women International, Huntsville Chapter, Dr. Lanita Carter, Scholarship Chair, P.O. Box 51, Huntsville, AL 35804-0051

Heritage Junior Woman's Club Scholarship - This is an endowed scholarship for a woman History major at UAH.  The first scholarship was awarded in 2001-02, and another is expected to be awarded in 2002-03.  It was endowed through the Heritage Junior Woman’s Club and John Hendricks, a graduate of the UAH history department and founder and CEO of the Discovery channel.  The amount of the scholarship varies with the stock market, but it will normally cover tuition for at least one course.  Applications go through the UAH Financial Aid office (deadline February 1).  For further information about this scholarship, contact the chair of the History Department, 824-6310.

Huntsville Woman's Club - offers a scholarship for a woman student at UAH in Nursing or Liberal Arts.  In 2007 the scholarship will be $1000. The deadline is February 26 and applications are not handled through the UAH Financial Aid Office. This scholarship is renewable, and applications are taken only when the current recipient graduates.  Applications are available from Erin Reid in Morton Hall 344.

University Women's Club (UAH) -  awards one or more full and partial scholarships each year.  Consideration is given to all students beginning their sophomore year, with preferences to a deserving student who demonstrates leadership potential and has a minimum of a 2.0/4.0 average.   Deadline is February 1.  To be considered, students must have a UAH Scholarship Application for the current academic year on file with the Financial Aid office on the UAH campus by February 1.   Please call 824-6241 for further details.

WEDC (Women's Economic Development Council) Foundation Grants - these annual grants to women range from $500 to 2500 for tuition, fees, books, dependent care, transportation or related expenses.  Criteria include the following:  Madison County resident, high school diploma or GED.  Special consideration is given to applicants whose household income is no more than 50% above the federal poverty guidelines.  They prefer candidates to be employed, and they give special consideration to those responsible for dependent care.  These scholarships are renewable, and include many items not usually covered in scholarships. They do not go through the UAH Financial Aid Office. Deadline is  April 1.   Decision is to be made by May 31.  The WEDC Foundation exists to promote and support women and their concerns in areas such as education, health, and social and economic development.  Applications are available online or from Erin Reid, Women's Studies program, Morton Hall room 344, or phone 824-6190.
